At the annual SESAR Joint Undertaking conference held at Brussels Airport on 12 October 2026, 450 aviation representatives discussed the deployment of air traffic management modernization across Europe.
Reaching the halfway stage of its program, SESAR JU announced that almost 190 solutions are now delivered for operational implementation, including 48 solutions from the first wave. Despite strong European technological capabilities, participants noted that airspace fragmentation remains an obstacle. Digitalisation, automation, and operational data sharing were highlighted as vital tools to boost network capacity, efficiency, and resilience.
During the event, stakeholders formally handed over the proposal for the second Common Project, designated CP2, to the European Commission. Led by SESAR JU, this framework defines technologies and services requiring synchronised deployment across the continent. Discussions also addressed the European Union multiannual financial framework and future research initiatives. In parallel, the Digital European Sky Awards recognized projects ORCI, ATC-TBO, and HERON, while an exhibition featured 40 project demonstration stands.
Why it matters for your training
Harmonized ATM modernization and synchronized CP2 deployments determine route optimization, airspace capacity, and operational ATC clearances for flight crews.
