Deutsche Lufthansa AG has issued operational notices to flight crews to manage temporary jet fuel supply constraints at its Frankfurt hub. The bottleneck stems from sustained low water levels on the Rhine and Main rivers, which restrict the load capacity of inland tanker barges, combined with scheduled inspection and maintenance on a primary supply pipeline.

To relieve demand on local storage, Lufthansa instructed Airbus A320 family crews to conduct fuel tankering from outstations. Cockpits are directed to upload extra fuel before flying into Frankfurt, subject to a strict upper limit of eight tonnes of fuel on landing to prevent excessive structural stress during touchdown and ground towing operations. Similar weight discipline is enforced on widebody operations to avoid penalizing takeoff performance.

Airport operator Fraport reported that site operations remain secure without flight cancellations. Frankfurt features on-site tank capacity of 186,000 cubic meters managed by Hydranten-Betriebs OHG, providing up to 14 days of standard operations, supported by European NATO pipeline connections and an underground hydrant network exceeding 60 kilometers.

Why it matters for your training

Fuel tankering alters operating empty weights, performance calculations, and landing mass margins, requiring crews to strictly respect structural limits and dispatch parameters during regional turnarounds.
