Wizz Air will maintain its flight operations at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport without changes throughout the 2026/2027 winter season. This decision follows a resolution by the Serbian civil aviation authority to postpone the implementation of tightened authorization rules for foreign carriers until 28 March 2027. Published on 28 September 2026 in Serbian official gazette 93/2026, the decree provides temporary legal certainty for the carrier.

The regulatory dispute escalated in June 2026, when new rules proposed limits on carriers operating outside the European Common Aviation Area (ECAA) framework. Deeming these provisions discriminatory and a significant obstacle to based aircraft operations, Wizz Air had threatened to close its operational hub, active since 2010, in autumn 2026.

According to industry analysts, the initial restrictions aimed to support state-backed Air Serbia against low-cost competition. Wizz Air currently deploys four Airbus A321neo aircraft at the Serbian capital, standing as a primary provider of point-to-point traffic. The regulatory reprieve allows both the airline and local civil aviation officials to conduct formal negotiations, aiming for an enduring agreement compatible with European aviation frameworks to secure future base operations.

Why it matters for your training

Cross-border traffic rights and ECAA regulatory alignments directly dictate airline base stability, crew rosters, and route networks in non-EU candidate states.
