Uganda Airlines has confirmed its first firm order with Boeing, signing a contract for four 737-8 and four 787-9 aircraft at the Farnborough Airshow. This marks a significant milestone for the young carrier, which was relaunched in 2019 and currently operates a fleet of two A330-300s and four Bombardier CRJ-900ERs. The order is part of a broader framework agreement signed in June 2026 for ten aircraft, including two converted freighters (a 767-300BCF and a 737-800BCF), valued at approximately $985 million.
The strategic rationale behind the order is clear: Uganda Airlines aims to position Entebbe as a competitive hub in East Africa, challenging established players like Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways. The 737-8, with a range of 3,500 nautical miles, is ideal for high-demand intra-African routes and extensions to the Middle East and India. The 787-9, capable of flying 8,300 nautical miles, will open direct long-haul services to Europe, Asia, and beyond. From an operational perspective, the choice of the 737 MAX reflects a focus on fuel efficiency—Boeing claims a 20–25% reduction in fuel burn compared to previous-generation narrowbodies. The 787-9, meanwhile, brings the ability to serve thin long-haul routes profitably, a key consideration for a growing airline.

Uganda Airlines currently serves 17 destinations in 13 countries, with plans to expand further.
