Spain is preparing to retire its two Airbus A310-300 aircraft used for government and royal family transport, known as T.22 in Spanish service. These aircraft have been in service since 2003 with the Ala 45 squadron based at Torrejón Air Base near Madrid, replacing the aging Douglas DC-8-52s. The retirement is driven by increasing maintenance costs due to the A310's production end in 1998, making spare parts scarce and expensive. Additionally, the aircraft's outdated cabin, noise signature, and environmental footprint no longer align with 2026 European standards, especially as other capitals like Berlin have already upgraded to newer-generation twinjets.
Madrid's industrial policy strongly favors European platforms, making Boeing an unlikely candidate. The two frontrunners are the A330-900 (A330neo) and the A350-900. The A330neo offers 14% fuel savings per seat over the A330ceo and proven reliability, while the A350-900 is Airbus's flagship long-haul aircraft with advanced lightweight structure and Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines. However, the used market is tight: A350s are still highly valued by airlines, while A330neos are becoming more available as network carriers modernize their fleets.
Spain's challenge is to find two suitable used aircraft at a reasonable cost and convert them to VIP configuration, including secure workspaces, rest areas, and protected communications. Germany's experience with its A350 VIP fleet, operated by the Luftwaffe since 2020, provides a valuable reference. The German A350s replaced A310s and A340s, offering improved reliability, range, and comfort. Spain could benefit from synergies in industrial support and best practices if it chooses the same type.
For ATPL and ATC students, this story illustrates the operational and economic factors behind fleet renewal decisions in military VIP transport, including maintenance logistics, aircraft performance comparisons, and the impact of industrial policy on procurement. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for future aviation professionals involved in fleet planning or airspace management.
