Russian aviation authority Rosaviatsia has approved a major design change for the Superjet 100 family, specifically covering RRJ-95B-100 and extended-range RRJ-95LR-100 variants. According to manufacturer Yakovlev, airframes utilizing SaM146 powerplants are now authorized to log up to 40,000 flight hours, 20,000 sectors, or 20 years of active service. Previous regulatory limits restricted these twinjets to 15,000 cycles, 25,000 flight hours, and 15 years.

Yakovlev explained that increases in structural life occur incrementally. Authorizations follow full-scale fatigue evaluations, engineering calculations, and operational data analysis confirming that structural components satisfy airworthiness requirements for corrosion, strength, and material fatigue. However, these updated parameters remain below the initial design benchmarks, which Russian government procurement files established at 54,000 flights, 70,000 flight hours, and 25 operating years.

The regulatory approval fulfills targets established in a 4.5 billion ruble research initiative launched five months earlier by the Ministry of Industry and Trade. For domestic carriers, life extensions remain critical: 154 SSJ-100 aircraft are currently active across seven operators. Franco-Russian manufacturer PowerJet suspended maintenance support for the SaM146 engines in March 2022 due to sanctions, while the domestic SJ-100 with Russian PD-8 engines has not secured certification or started series deliveries.
