Nantes Atlantique airport has launched a new-generation autonomous bag drop system, described as a first in France. The system is built around an "open collector" conveyor belt that is fully accessible to passengers, replacing the closed architecture of traditional check-in desks. This innovation, inspired by a similar solution already deployed at Edinburgh Airport by VINCI Airports, aims to simplify check-in, reduce queues, and improve passenger comfort while maintaining security and baggage control standards.
The process begins at self-service kiosks where passengers check in and print their baggage tags. They then place their luggage directly onto the conveyor belt without any intermediate visible control step, in an open and ergonomic environment designed to make the process more intuitive. This new setup builds on the automated bag drop (DBA) system already in place at Nantes since 2018 on certain routes.
The reconfigured zone follows a simplified check-in model based on feedback from VINCI Airports' network, particularly Edinburgh Airport. The goal is to minimize successive manipulations and contact points to "streamline the process, simplify actions, reduce waiting time, and offer everyone an intuitive, modern, and pleasant experience," according to the airport operator. The redesigned welcome area also aims to better manage passenger flows during peak periods, such as holiday weekends.
The project is part of VINCI Airports' innovation strategy, which is gradually deploying self-service and automation solutions across its European platforms. TG Concept, a specialist in baggage handling systems, designed and integrated the new autonomous bag drop conveyor. RESA Airport Data Systems provided IT expertise for the software interface between passenger processing, check-in systems, and baggage handling. The system underwent regulatory checks before being commissioned for the spring-summer season to ensure compliance with safety, security, and reliability standards.
For the operator, this project positions Nantes Atlantique as a pilot site for new baggage-related practices in France. "This new autonomous bag drop zone illustrates our ambition to concretely improve the passenger journey. By rethinking uses and spaces, we offer a solution that is both smooth, safe, and comfortable. Inspired by VINCI Airports' innovations at Edinburgh Airport, this new system positions Nantes Atlantique as a pilot site in France," said Guillaume Dubois, director of Nantes Atlantique airport. The infrastructure was tested during a peak weekend and is part of the 2024-2026 renovation program aimed at modernizing existing facilities while awaiting a broader restructuring project.
