Luxair deployed its first Embraer E195-E2 between Luxembourg and London City on 12 October 2026. Configured in a 136-seat layout with a two-by-two cabin configuration, the jet is now the largest commercial aircraft operating at the airport, according to London City management. The aircraft will operate on selected rotations of the route, where the carrier provides up to 31 weekly flights.

Operating into London City requires compliance with strict operational constraints, including short-field performance, stringent noise limitations, and steep-approach capabilities. The EASA certified the E195-E2 for steep-approach operations in November 2023, following a demonstration flight at the airport in July 2022. The E190-E2 had previously achieved this approval in 2021.

London City highlighted that the E195-E2 offers a takeoff noise footprint approximately 60% lower than previous-generation jets such as the E190, alongside improved fuel efficiency. This commercial debut aligns with Luxair's fleet modernization program. In December 2024, the airline exercised options for two additional E195-E2s, expanding its firm backlog to six aircraft, complemented by three purchase rights and delivery positions running into 2027.

Why it matters for your training

For flight crews, operating the E195-E2 into London City illustrates the complex operational demands of steep-approach certification and performance management on short, noise-sensitive runways.
