The Portuguese government has selected Lufthansa as the new shareholder for TAP Air Portugal, triggering contrasting responses across aviation labor groups and trade bodies.
Several employee representatives and trade associations criticize the government for excluding them from discussions during the transaction process. Labor groups are requesting long-term employment commitments alongside formal assurances that the Lisbon hub will be preserved. In particular, the cabin crew union highlights potential negative consequences for airline staffing.
Conversely, the Portuguese pilot association currently identifies no reason for alarm. According to television broadcaster SIC, the pilots view Lufthansa's entry as fundamentally positive for the carrier.
Industry concern also extends to the national travel agency association, whose members account for nearly 40 percent of TAP Air Portugal ticket sales. The various associations express hope that authorities will consult them ahead of any potential full privatization of the carrier.
