Taking office on 1 October, Linz Airport's new managing director, Jörg Ebbighausen, described the operational situation as precarious. The regional facility recorded 262,347 passengers in 2025, representing an approximate 40 percent decline compared to 2018 levels. Geographically, Linz faces close competition from Salzburg, situated 130 kilometres away, and Vienna, located 200 kilometres away.

This commercial contraction followed the withdrawal of Austrian Airlines, which ceased flights to Vienna in 2018 and terminated its Frankfurt route in October 2025. Currently, DAT ensures scheduled connectivity to Frankfurt under a Public Service Obligation framework funded by the state of Upper Austria with subsidies of up to nine million euros annually. In addition, Ryanair suspended its winter route to London, showing little interest in local expansion under the current Austrian aviation tax structure.

Returning to break-even performance requires reaching between 500,000 and 600,000 passengers annually, placing the previously targeted 2031 profitability date under review. While Upper Austria assumed 100 percent ownership of the airport, the regional government intends to sell a 49 percent stake to a strategic partner to fund infrastructure projects, including runway resurfacing planned for 2030/31.
