KLM tests TaxiBot and OptiDescent during flight operations
Participating in the Aviation Challenge, KLM and KLM Cityhopper are trialing new operational procedures to reduce fuel burn on the ground and during descent.
KLM alongside KLM Cityhopper are currently assessing several operational measures designed to enhance overall flight efficiency within the framework of the Aviation Challenge.
A first demonstration flight was completed on September 28, 2026, linking Amsterdam to Delhi. KLM Cityhopper follows this milestone on September 30 on a route to Dublin operated with an Embraer E195-E2.
The Dublin service incorporates multiple technological trials:
- Ground maneuvering via the TaxiBot system, allowing the aircraft to be towed from the terminal gate toward the departure runway without starting its main engines;
- Operational testing of the OptiDescent platform, developed in partnership with Sita to optimize aircraft descent profiles;
- Innovative cabin procedures aimed at improving on-board waste separation.
In addition, KLM announced intentions to increase communication surrounding sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) throughout October. Flight data and findings generated during these operations will be distributed to other airlines taking part in the initiative.
Why it matters for your training
Engine-off taxiing solutions and descent optimization tools directly impact flight deck workload, operational energy management, and approach planning.
