SkyTeam is conducting the fifth edition of The Aviation Challenge in 2026 under the theme "Collective Momentum", prompting member carriers to test and share sustainable operational solutions. In this framework, KLM operates a showcase flight from Amsterdam to Delhi on 28 September, while regional subsidiary KLM Cityhopper operates an Amsterdam–Dublin service on 30 September using an Embraer E195-E2.

The regional sector focuses on operational efficiency trials. KLM Cityhopper tests the TaxiBot system, allowing dispatch towing from the gate to the departure runway without operating the aircraft's main engines. In partnership with SITA, the crew also evaluates OptiDescent to optimize the descent profile and reduce fuel burn. In-cabin trials include enhanced waste separation concepts, such as a redesigned cup holder and updated waste trolley. KLM Cityhopper also marks its 60th anniversary during the flight.

Concurrently, KLM uses the initiative and the month of October to promote SAF awareness through onboard videos, magazine features, and crew involvement. Social initiatives coordinated with Wings of Support assist an educational center in Delhi. Following the flights, participating carriers will analyze operational data to assess potential implementation in regular airline operations.

Why it matters for your training

Real-world testing of OptiDescent and engine-off taxiing directly demonstrates how operational flight planning and flight profile management contribute to airline fuel conservation targets.
