ITA Airways has announced a new seasonal direct route between Rome-Fiumicino (FCO) and Santo Domingo (SDQ) for the winter 2026-2027 season, marking its entry into the Central American and Caribbean market. Tickets went on sale on April 22, with the first flight scheduled for November 30, 2026. Initially operated once a week on Mondays, the frequency will increase to two weekly flights from mid-December to the end of March 2027, aligning with peak winter tourism demand.
This strategic move positions Rome to capture a share of European traffic seeking winter sun in the Dominican Republic, competing with major hubs like Madrid and Paris that already have strong Caribbean networks. By choosing Santo Domingo over more saturated destinations like Punta Cana, ITA Airways targets both tourist and ethnic markets, with potential connections to other points in the country via local networks.
The route will be served by the Airbus A330neo, ITA Airways' new-generation long-haul aircraft configured in three classes: Business, Premium Economy, and Economy. The A330-900 offers 291 seats, including 30 lie-flat business seats in a 1-2-1 configuration, 24 premium economy seats in 2-3-2, and 237 economy seats (36 with extra legroom). This aircraft delivers approximately 25% reduction in fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions compared to previous generations, a key selling point for leisure routes sensitive to both price and environmental footprint.
Santo Domingo is the first new destination announced for ITA Airways' winter 2026-2027 program. The airline had previously unveiled a winter 2025-2026 network of 53 destinations, including 16 domestic, 21 international short/medium-haul, and 16 intercontinental routes, with the notable launch of Rome–Mauritius on the A330neo. Adding Santo Domingo a year later continues the strategic diversification of long-haul leisure destinations from the Rome hub. This expansion is supported by an accelerated fleet plan, with four additional long-haul aircraft expected by 2027, bringing the total fleet to over 100 aircraft and boosting intercontinental capacity.
By adding Santo Domingo, ITA Airways strengthens Rome-Fiumicino's position as a gateway for long-haul leisure destinations. However, the Roman hub faces intense competition from Madrid, Lisbon, Paris, and Frankfurt, which already serve as major redistribution platforms for Latin America and the Caribbean. The challenge for the Italian carrier is to offer attractive connection times, competitive cabin products, and pricing aligned with leisure market expectations.
