Emirates has completed the installation of SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet on its first Airbus A380, marking a world first for the largest passenger aircraft. With three dedicated antennas and over 2 Gbps of bandwidth available onboard, the airline promises a connectivity experience "better than at home," free for all passengers, and plans to roll it out across its entire long-haul fleet.
The first Starlink-equipped A380 has returned to Dubai after installation and certification work carried out in Newquay, UK. This aircraft inaugurates a new phase of the airline's connectivity program, which has already committed to equipping 232 Boeing 777s and A380s with SpaceX's solution since late 2025. The A380 was already a pioneer in offering in-flight internet, but with a total bandwidth of less than 1 Mbps for the entire aircraft. The Starlink configuration—three dedicated antennas on the superjumbo—now improves this capacity "by a factor of a thousand," according to the airline, achieving over 2 Gbps for the whole aircraft at cruising altitude of 40,000 feet.
With Starlink, Emirates aims for a connectivity experience where passengers can simultaneously stream, game online, work, make internet calls, or browse social media from their own devices. The service will be free in all classes and requires only a simple sign-in via the airline's Wi-Fi portal. Emirates highlights an experience "better than at home," made possible by the combination of very high bandwidth and low latency, characteristic of Starlink's low Earth orbit constellation. Future enhancements include live TV streaming via Starlink, first on personal devices, then integrated into the seatback entertainment system.
As the world's largest passenger aircraft, the A380 poses specific challenges for integrating high-speed connectivity across two full decks. The configuration chosen by Emirates—three Starlink antennas and more Wi-Fi access points than on its Boeing 777s—was designed to handle the high passenger density and twin-deck layout. Compared to the 777s, which receive two Starlink antennas, the A380 adds a third terminal and extra access points to ensure uniform coverage on both decks. The integration between the two levels has been optimized for seamless handover and high data rates, which will depend on the number of simultaneous users and device capabilities.
After this first installation in the UK, Emirates plans to start Starlink retrofits at its own maintenance facilities in Dubai to accelerate fleet-wide deployment. The airline has already equipped 25 Boeing 777-300ERs with Starlink, and over 650,000 passengers have experienced the service since its commercial launch in November 2025. Emirates aims to operate the largest international fleet of Starlink-equipped widebodies by 2027, with 232 aircraft (A380s and 777s) connected. At the Dubai Airshow 2025, the airline announced installation rates of up to 14 aircraft per month, targeting completion around mid-2027. Beyond connectivity, Emirates continues to position the A380 as a showcase for its travel experience, with its onboard lounge bar, first-class shower spa, and now high-speed connectivity in all cabins. The airline's $5 billion retrofit program includes modernizing 219 aircraft, with 110 A380s receiving new Premium Economy cabins, updated Business Class, refreshed First Class suites, and an entertainment system with over 6,500 channels. From August 2026, a new phase will bring additional cabin products and a more immersive entertainment system coupled with Starlink connectivity.
