On April 25, 1784, aviation history was made when Louis-Bernard Guyton de Morveau and Abbé Bertrand launched a free flight from the Place de l'Intendance in Dijon, aboard a hydrogen balloon owned by the Academy of Sciences. Their goal was to achieve a completely untethered ascent, a crucial step toward mastering aerial navigation. During the flight over the city, the two aeronauts focused on the major challenges of air travel: maneuverability and piloting. They experimented with steering the balloon, especially in changing weather conditions, seeking a technical solution to counteract the wind—the primary obstacle to controlling the aircraft's trajectory. The balloon was equipped with sails, oars, and a rudder, reflecting early attempts at directional control.
