Romanian carrier AnimaWings has filed for insolvency at the Bucharest Court on 30 September, immediately following the operational grounding of its entire fleet of six leased Airbus A220-300s. The airline cited recurrent technical difficulties alongside rising operating costs and adverse market conditions, while denying that lease payment arrears prompted the withdrawal. The carrier did not single out specific systems or its Pratt & Whitney PW1500G powerplants.

The phasing out of the A220s occurred progressively throughout September. YR-GUN conducted an air turnback to Bucharest on a service to Nice on 20 September, while YR-FUN and YR-CHR completed their last scheduled rotations on 28 September to Timișoara and London Gatwick respectively. Hours after the legal filing on 30 September, AnimaWings ferried two of its newest aircraft, YR-BUN and YR-RUN, directly from Bucharest to Toulouse.

The sudden withdrawal leaves AnimaWings with only two Airbus A320 aircraft, registered YR-AGC and YR-AGD, to sustain a commercial schedule originally dimensioned for eight hulls. The airline confirmed it plans to maintain restructured flight operations despite ongoing cancellations and schedule adjustments.

Why it matters for your training

For flight crews and airline operators, such abrupt fleet groundings underline how fleet-wide technical bottlenecks can destabilize fleet planning and threaten type-rated flight crew employment.
