AirHelp, a passenger rights advocacy platform, has released its 2026 airport ranking, evaluating 279 airports across 76 countries based on punctuality (60% of the score), passenger experience (20%), and facility quality (20%). The results challenge traditional hierarchies, with Latin American and South African airports dominating the top spots, while many European hubs, including major French airports, lag behind.
**Latin America and South Africa Lead the Pack**
Panama City's Tocumen Airport tops the list with a score of 8.48/10, followed by Fortaleza's Pinto Martins Airport in Brazil (8.42) and Cape Town International Airport in South Africa (8.36). Brazil places five airports in the top 10, including Recife (4th), Brasília (5th), Rio de Janeiro Santos Dumont (6th), and Belém Val-de-Cans (8th). This success is attributed to high punctuality rates and positive passenger feedback on services and facilities. For ATPL and ATC students, this underscores the importance of operational discipline and customer service in airport management—skills that are increasingly valued in the industry.
**European Airports: Mixed Results**
European airports have a modest showing, with only a few regional hubs in the top 20. Bodø Airport in Norway ranks 9th (8.17), with about 87% of flights on time, while Billund Airport in Denmark takes 10th (8.16), excelling in passenger satisfaction. French airports, however, struggle significantly. Lyon-Saint-Exupéry leads France with a score of 7.69 (around 100th globally), followed by Paris-Orly (7.67), Bordeaux-Mérignac (7.62), and Toulouse-Blagnac (7.61). Paris-Charles de Gaulle, France's main hub, drops to 216th with a score of 7.0, penalized by poor punctuality. Even Paris-Beauvais (7.11) outranks CDG. Nice-Côte d'Azur ranks lowest among French airports at 6.73. This data is a wake-up call for future aviation professionals: even large hubs must prioritize punctuality to maintain competitiveness.
**The Worst Performers and a Trend Toward Mid-Sized Airports**
At the bottom of the list, Lisbon's Humberto Delgado Airport ranks 274th (punctuality score of 6.3), while Tunis-Carthage Airport closes the ranking with a score of about 5.5. AirHelp notes that mid-sized airports like Cork in Ireland (39th, 7.94) are proving that operational efficiency and passenger care can outweigh sheer size. For ATPL and ATC students, this trend highlights the growing importance of data-driven operations and customer-centric strategies in aviation—a shift that will shape future airport management and air traffic control practices.
