**A New Caribbean Link**
Air France is expanding its Caribbean network with a new seasonal direct route between Pointe-à-Pitre (Guadeloupe) and Panama City, launching on December 11, 2026, and operating twice weekly until March 5, 2027. The flights will depart Pointe-à-Pitre on Mondays and Fridays, and return from Panama City on Tuesdays and Saturdays, designed to optimise connections from Fort-de-France (Martinique) and Cayenne (French Guiana). Tickets went on sale on July 22, 2026.
**Strategic Hub in the Making**
This route is part of Air France's Regional Caribbean Network, which already links Guadeloupe to Fort-de-France, Cayenne, Belém, Fortaleza, and Miami using two Airbus A320s based in Guadeloupe. The choice of Panama City is no accident: Tocumen International Airport is a major gateway to Latin America, serving as the hub for Copa Airlines, with which Air France has a codeshare agreement. Copa's network reaches over 75 cities in 32 countries across North, Central, and South America, as well as the Caribbean. By connecting through Panama, passengers can check luggage through to their final destination, making Pointe-à-Pitre a more attractive transit point.
**Aircraft and Passenger Experience**
The service will be operated by an Airbus A320 configured for 170 passengers in Business and Economy cabins, with high-speed Wi-Fi available free of charge to Flying Blue members. This complements Air France's existing long-haul flights between Paris-CDG and Panama City (up to five weekly), offering a regional feeder option for travellers from the French Caribbean and French Guiana.
**Industry Implications**
For ATPL and ATC students, this development illustrates the operational complexity of building a regional hub-and-spoke network. The route requires careful scheduling to align with Copa's wave of connections, and the use of a single aircraft type (A320) simplifies maintenance and crew planning. It also highlights the importance of codeshare agreements in expanding route networks without adding aircraft. From an ATC perspective, Pointe-à-Pitre's role as a regional hub means increased traffic management challenges, especially during peak connection times. This case study is a practical example of how airlines optimise fleet utilisation and network design to capture both point-to-point and transit traffic.
**A Win for Regional Connectivity**
Local stakeholders welcome the move. Alain Bièvre, president of Guadeloupe Pôle Caraïbes airport authority, called it "a strategic step" that reinforces the airport's role as a regional hub and opens new perspectives for connections to Central America, Latin America, and the US West Coast. Lionel Rault, Air France-KLM's regional director for the Caribbean, said the route "reaffirms Air France's leadership in connectivity between the French Antilles-Guyana and the Americas."
