On September 30, 2026, Romanian carrier Animawings filed for insolvency before a court in Bucharest to secure legal protection from its creditors while attempting to restore its financial footing. As part of this reorganization, the private airline is sharply downsizing its fleet from eight aircraft to just two.

The carrier is removing all six leased Airbus A220-300 aircraft, operated since 2024, leaving only its two older A320 jets in service. Airline leadership attributed this retreat primarily to recurring technical problems that kept part of the A220 fleet grounded over recent months. Local reporting by media outlet boardingpass.ro also revealed unpaid debts to several creditors, prompting airports in Romania and Greece to pursue legal recovery actions. Furthermore, discussions to sell half of the business to outside investors, including the investment branch of Banca Transilvania, concluded without an agreement.

Animawings had transitioned from charter services toward scheduled flights to compete against Romanian flag carrier Tarom on domestic and European networks. Although the company plans to continue operating, the severe fleet reduction will trigger widespread flight cancellations and the total closure of multiple scheduled routes.
