Alaska Airlines is shifting its network strategy by deploying widebody Boeing 787 aircraft on intercontinental routes from its primary hub at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Following its acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines, the carrier intends to triple its direct long-haul destinations from Seattle to at least 15 by 2030, challenging Delta Air Lines.

The long-haul rollout includes projected routes to Paris and Athens next year, supplementing active flights to London, Rome, Reykjavik, and Seoul. Cirium data indicates that roughly 92% of Alaska's scheduled intercontinental seat capacity from Seattle through August 2027 directly overlaps with nonstop services operated by Delta.

This widebody transition introduces operational challenges. Management noted that Boeing 787 crew costs remain higher than standard levels due to the establishment of new pilot and cabin crew bases in Seattle, which the airline expects to normalize as additional airframes enter service. Concurrently, Alaska plans to integrate into revenue-sharing joint business agreements led by American Airlines across both Atlantic and Pacific markets, pending regulatory and antitrust approvals.

Why it matters for your training

The widebody expansion and the establishment of a Boeing 787 crew base in Seattle create direct long-haul fleet command opportunities and structural type-rating transitions within the airline.
